Leadership Skills And Your Career

Leadership skills are most times not taken into account when one is dealing with his or her employees. To be an effective leader and have more influence on your followers, one must posses various leadership skills. For instance, a good leader is a person who is able to initiate action amongst people. He or she does not wait to react to a situation or wait for others to make the first move towards achieving something. He or she leads the rest.

An effective leader sets the example for others. He or she is a person who is of unquestionable moral and social standing in the eyes of those who follow him or her. Without this, it is easy for a leader to loose respect. A good leader is able to give and get information in return. He or she knows when, how and what to communicate to subordinates. Lack of proper communication between a leader and hi or her followers can be a stumbling block to the overall performance of an organization.

To be viewed as a person endowed with leadership skills; an individual must have the ability to solve problems. He or she must be an effective and swift problem solver. An organization’s future could be at stake if there is no leadership in it. There has to be someone who is able to make good decisions to see it operate perfectly.

A leader should be trustworthy. This is particularly important when it comes to decision making in the work place. Your followers should trust that the decisions you make are the best and that these decisions are to their benefit. Further, as a leader, you can make mistakes, but it is how you handle the situation after the mistake that will act to build trust in those you lead. The faster and the more easily you correct the mistake, the more your followers will learn to trust you.

Leadership skills are not only hereditary, but can also be learnt by all of us. If you were not born a leader, then work towards being one. Learn how to influence others by your actions and words, learn how to take the lead and most importantly learn how to cultivate trust among your people.

I think another key quality of leadership is presence and lack of ego. It’s ironic that it took getting an MBA for me to realize that ego is so destructive :) . Great post.
